With the right care, an oilskin hat will develop its own character over time. The wax will naturally wear with use, but this is part of the beauty of oilskin — a well-loved hat should look lived in, not untouched.
Everyday Care
After wearing your hat, give it a moment to air before putting it away. If it has picked up loose dirt or dust, gently remove it with a soft brush, taking care not to disturb the waxed surface.
For more stubborn marks, sponge the hat gently with cold water. Avoid scrubbing, as this can remove or disturb the wax.
Keep Cleaning Simple
Oilskin doesn't need conventional cleaning products. Never use soap, detergent, bleach or other cleaning agents on the outer of the hat, as these can strip the wax from the canvas and affect its weatherproofing.
If the sweatband needs freshening, you can gently sponge it with a warm, soapy cloth, taking care to keep the cleaning solution away from the outer oilskin.
Let It Dry Naturally
If your oilskin gets wet, allow it to dry naturally. Never wring, squeeze or spin dry the hat, and don't put it in the dryer.
Oilskin should also never be dry cleaned or ironed. Heat can alter the wax and affect both the finish and shape of the hat.
Protect It From the Sun
One of the easiest ways to damage an oilskin hat is to leave it sitting in direct sunlight for extended periods. In particular, avoid leaving your hat on the dashboard or back seat of your car for long periods, where heat and sunlight can dry out the wax.
When you're not wearing it, store your hat somewhere cool and dry, away from prolonged direct sunlight.
When Your Hat Needs Re-Waxing
Oilskin naturally loses some of its wax through regular wear, particularly around areas that are handled or exposed to the elements. When the canvas starts to look noticeably dry, faded or worn, it's time to give it some attention.
As a general guide, we recommend re-waxing your hat once a year, or whenever it is looking particularly dry.
How to Re-Wax Your Hat
We recommend using paraffin or beeswax, which should be available from leather, shoe-care or saddlery suppliers.
Soften the wax until it is workable, then use a clean cloth to distribute it evenly across the hat. Work gradually and make sure the wax is spread consistently over the entire outer surface, paying particular attention to areas that look especially dry.
The aim is to replenish the wax rather than build up a thick layer. Take your time and allow the wax to settle into the canvas.

Oilskin is a material that tells its own story. Scratches, creases and subtle changes in colour are part of its character, and with regular care, your hat will continue to develop rather than simply deteriorate.
Look after it, re-wax it when it needs it, and wear it often. That's what oilskin was made for.
