To get you started, here’s some handy hints for keeping your hat in shape.

Fabric Hat

To care for your fabric hat, we recommend the following:

  • Remove loose soil with a soft brush.
  • Hand sponge with warm water. Depending on the fabric, you may use a diluted soap but test it on an unseen part first i.e. under the brim at the back.
  • Do not use detergent, bleach or any other cleaning agent.
  • Do not wring, squeeze or spin dry.
  • Use warm iron only.
  • Store in a cool, dry place. Do not rest the hat on the brim, stand it on the crown.

Leather Hat

To care for your leather hat, we recommend the following:

  • Dry clean only with a leather specialist dry cleaner
  • Do not iron
  • For specific leather cleaning and protection products, we recommend contacting a leather care specialist.

Oilskin Hat

To care for your oilskin hat, we recommend the following:

  • Remove loose soil with a soft brush.
  • Sponge with cold water. Do not scrub.
  • Do not use soap, detergent, bleach or any other cleaning agent on the outer. You may sponge clean the sweatband with a warm soapy cloth.
  • Do not wring, squeeze or spin dry.
  • Do not dry clean.
  • Do not iron.
  • Do not store for long periods of time in direct sunlight i.e. the back of your car, as the sun will dry out the wax.
  • Re-wax every year or when the hat is looking very dry and worn. Recommended wax is paraffin or beeswax which should be available in leather shoe or saddlery shops. Soften the wax and distribute the wax evenly with a cloth over the whole hat.

Felt Hat

To care for your felt hat, we recommend the following:

  • Remove loose soil with a soft brush. Always brush your hat anti-clockwise.
  • If after brushing a soiled spot remains, slightly dampen a clean cloth and lightly clean. Finish with anti-clockwise action.
  • Do not dry clean.
  • Do not put your hat away when it is moist with perspiration or wet. Turn the sweatband out and allow the hat to dry slowly. Do not allow your hat to dry in direct sun as the hat will shrink (there is natural shrinkage in felt)
  • When your hat is not being worn, do not rest the hat on the brim unless the brim is flat. We suggest standing it on the crown to help keep the brim in shape.
  • Store hat out of direct sunlight and humidity.
  • This hat can be treated with a silicon waterproofing spray.

Straw & Cork Hat

To care for your straw and cork hat, we recommend the following:

  • Remove loose soil with a soft brush. You may wipe the hat with a damp cloth.
  • Do not dry clean.
  • When your hat is not being worn, do not rest the hat on the brim unless it is a flat brim. We suggest standing it on the crown to help keep the brim in shape.
  • Do not handle the hat by the front pinch. When putting on and taking off, handle the straw by its brim. Continual pinching of the front pinch will cause the hat to wear out and crack.
  • Store hat out of direct sunlight and humidity. Store in a cool dry place to avoid the straw drying out.
  • Straws made from natural fibres such as our panamas and pandanus straws can become brittle when dry. You can rehydrate by using steam.

Structured hats that are slightly too large may be made tighter by tucking foam under the sweatband. Fabric hats that are too small can be stretched up a size.
